1. Mary Lou passed this one along to me -- the always-wonderful Hennepin Library's BookSpace. It might be out of our reach, but this is the gold standard for bringing together information sources in an attractive and easy-to-use way.
2. Proquest offers a free Library Marketing Kit, which is really for marketing online resources. It is not the usual self-promotion by a database vendor. Take a look.

I just looked at bit at Hennepin's book page. The thing that impresses me in general with other library systems is how they allow users to interact with the library website. It's not that I don't think staff at LCPL isn't willing or capable to make lists of favorite titles or genres, but why not start a wiki or blog and let our patrons contribute also? People love to read and write book reviews and make lists - maybe we should let them.
And pulling out new titles added to the catalog and putting them into an RSS feed (or simply a dynamic webpage) is a great idea. Patrons often ask how they can see new DVDs/books on CD/mysteries/etc. I think I heard John and Jie were working on something similar for us?
If Hennepin is the gold standard, perhaps we should strive for bronze or silver (or even gold) and maybe we'd surprise ourselves...
People should read this.
