Librarians' Internet Index

It sounds like we've got a contingent who use and like the recommended websites. So here's a thought. Instead of keeping the page as is, let's include a link to the Librarians' Internet Index on our electronic resources page after the redesign. We'll still have direct links in some areas, but I think LII would adequately replace our chosen sites in others. If there's anything they miss -- for example, something that keeps coming up for homework assignments -- we could set up an account on del.icio.us for all the branches to use.

What do you think?

I'm sure that would be fine. When you have a moment, and are sitting down, tell me about content- especially, do I have resposibility for some areas?
Of course, IT'S PERFECTLY ALL RIGHT IF YOU DON'T NEED ME AT ALL...... just saying....

Well, you wouldn't have responsibility for LII's content, they have actual paid staff for that. I don't know if we'll divvy up chores for maintaining the electronic resources after redesign -- it may depend on what form it all takes.

sounds fine. mh ps what do you mean "paid?"

Not volunteers like us, obviously!

Julie, I can't see anything wrong with LII's links, although, for local stuff like taxes we ARE going to need something like the del.ci.ous
account...and of course if we will need to delegate someone to maintain/update those local links or have some process to update the links...Just my 2 cents! Oona

Good point, Oona. I think for taxes in particular, putting up a page with links to forms and tax help (both on the web and in our physical collection) from January - April would probably do the trick. (Having those links in a del.icio.us account is still a good idea, for those oddball tax questions that come September.) Local government information has to be available to patrons year round. Of course, they can just go to LoudounPedia, right?

Julie, is the deli.cio.us account something patrons would have access to or would it be a place for staff to store frequently used sites? I'm afraid I was completely unimpressed when using it for LCPL 2.0, but part of it was my dislike of social tagging. Which is off-topoic. Anyway, were you thinking deli.cio.us would replace the Recommended Sites (in whatever format they end up taking) altogether?

Second question: Will we be allowed to link to LoudounPedia, since it's a wiki? Meaning patrons could contribute to it as well? Frankly, I think it would need some work to make it an extremely useful reference resource. (Although having the list of hotspots is great.) But it can't take the place of the county and town government websites, no matter how good it looks.

I was thinking del.icio.us for library staff use only. The LCPL website is the resource for patrons. We will still have links to websites, just not off in a separate page, and not so many of them. So LII, if we use it, would supplement the sites we will still point to in some subject areas.

I have no problem with linking to wikis and blogs that are intended for patrons. We already do that with the Whatcha Readin' blog for teens. And my LoudounPedia reference was tongue in cheek and mainly intended to irritate Brett if he ever gets around to reading this blog. (I'm glad you like the hotspots map, it was a pain in the butt to do.)

We will definitely have local government information and news on the website. It's hard to find and important for our core audience.
